About Mattackal Kudumbayogam
The history of Mattackal Kudumbayogam dates back to 1668. The patriarch of the family, Idukkula Kunjamman Tharakan, migrated in the 1660s from Kuruvilangad, a region known for its early Christian converts following the arrival of St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, to Koipuram. It is settled history that St. Thomas landed at Cranganore (now Kodungallur) in A.D. 52 and, after preaching the Gospel there, moved southward to Kuruvilangad towards the end of the second century. It was from Kuruvilangad that our progenitor, Kunjamman Tharakan, along with three other families (Ezhumalil, Mullasseril, and Kavala), came over to Chengannur and subsequently settled on the northern bank of the Pampa River at Koipuram, about 6–7 km from Chengannur. In the words of His Grace Philipose Mar Chrysostom (Valia Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church), the Mattackal family tree grew and flourished, having been planted on the fertile soil of the riverbank.
